The Leadership Behind Team Building for Entrepreneurs

One key to connecting with people is recognizing that even in a group, you have to relate to people as individuals. General Norman Schwarzkopf affirmed: “ I have seen competent leaders who stood in front of a platoon and all they saw was a platoon. But great leaders stand in front of a platoon and see it as 44 individuals, each of whom have aspirations, each of whom wants to live, each of whom wants to do good”.

Connecting with people isn’t something that needs to happen only when a leader is communicating to groups of people. It needs to happen with individuals. The stronger the relationship and connection between individuals, the more likely the follower will want to help the leader.

Some leaders have problems with the Law of Connection because they believe that connecting is the responsibility of followers. Only positional leaders think this way. They often think, “ I am the boss”. I have the position. These are my employees. Let them come to me. Seriously? Successful leaders who obey the Law of Connection are always initiators. They take the first step with others and make the effort to continue building relationships.

Glenn Llopis, of Forbes, writes: “It takes great leadership to build great teams. Leaders  who are not  afraid to course correct, make the difficult decisions and establish standards of performance that are constantly  being met – and improving at all times.   Whether in the workplace, professional sports,  or your local community, team building requires a keen understanding of people, their strengths and what gets them excited to work with others.   Team building requires the management of egos and their constant demands for attention and recognition – not always warranted.   Team building is both an art and a science and the leader who can consistently build high performance teams is worth their weight in gold.”

From Wikipedia, team building is a collective term for various types of activities used to enhance social relations and define roles within teams, often involving collaborative tasks. It is distinct from team training, which is designed by a combination of business managers, learning and development to improve the efficiency, rather than interpersonal relations. Many team building exercises is aimed at exposing and addressing interpersonal problems within the group. The formal definition of team-building includes:

  • aligning around goals
  • building effective working relationships
  • reducing team members’ role ambiguity
  • finding solutions to team problems

How to Work on Team Building

One of the most powerful reasons for team building is to get results. Through a series of planned team bonding events that are fun and motivational, teams build skills like communication, planning, problem-solving and conflict resolution. Team bonding ideas that work help facilitate long term team building through fostering genuine connections, deeper discussions and processing.

Team building brings people together by encouraging collaboration and teamwork. Fun activities that help people see each other in a different light allow them to connect in a different setting. People on your team are asked to think about the implications of these activities at their workplace. Here are 4 steps to building an effective team:

Establish leadership

Before you can start team building, you need to develop the right kind of leadership skills. Great leaders foster trust through honesty and transparency.

Set Goals

The importance setting goals in team building cannot be over emphasize. Team members become involved in action planning to achieve set goals. This is intended to strengthen motivation and foster a sense of ownership.

Try to learn more about each member of your team, their skill sets, how they are motivated and their likes and dislikes. This knowledge is invaluable to leaders, as it allows them to match each employee’s expertise and competencies to specific problems, which will help increase productivity.

As your team starts to cooperate more, examine the way they work together and take steps to improve communication, cooperation and trust among the team. Resolve any conflict amicably and brainstorm more on solutions, which helps to empower team members.
