Ideas, Dream and Vision are not enough

Reach high for stars lie in your soul. Dream deep for every dream precedes the goal.– Pamela Vaull Starr

Wikipedia defined a goal as “a desired result or possible outcome that a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve: a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development. Many people or organizations endeavor to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines.”

When you don’t know your destination, every way becomes plausible. Goals help you focus on achieving success. Goal setting is a series of steps. It leads to purpose in life. It is the starting point for success. Every great minds of today, started by setting goals towards actualizing their dreams. Goals can be long-term, intermediate, or short-term. The primary difference is the time required to achieve them

A famous quote reads – “On the journey to life’s highway, keep your eyes upon the goal. Focus on the donuts, not upon the hole.”

A popular story of an ancient Indian sage is paramount in the concept of goal setting because your goals allows you to focus on achieving them. It’s an action plan!

The Indian sage was teaching his students the art of archery. On one faithful day, he wanted to teach his students the importance of focusing on target. To actualize that, he placed a wooden bird as the target and made the disciples to aimed at the bird’s eye. He then asked the first student to describe what he saw. He said; “I see the trees, the branches, the leaves, the sky, the bird and its eye.” The sage then asked the student to wait.

He went to the second student and asked him also to describe what he saw. He said; “I only see the eye of the bird.” The sage said, “Good. Now shoot.” The arrow then hit the bird’s eye.

I believe you can discern the moral lesson in the story.

Until we align our focus to our goals, nothing is going to happen. Our dreams will only be mere wishes.

However, it’s sometimes hard focusing on goals. But it’s a skill that can be learned and developed upon. It requires your determination and the right attitude. As Peter Nivio Zarlenga affirmed, “Action conquers fear.”

Ideas, dreams and vision, are not enough. They need the backing of goals, focus and action.

Why goals are important

Goals give direction to dreams, visions and ideas. Brian Tracy said; “Goals are fuel in the furnace of achievements.” Without clear written goals, life storm blows you in any direction. Even when you are blown away, you can’t trace your steps back because, there’s no compass pointing to your destination.

Will you board a plane without knowing its destination? Or will you charter a cab going in the opposite direction? Therefore, why go through life wishing and dreaming? Set goals. Focus on the goals. Act on the goals.
