Want to be an Effective Leader Tomorrow? Learn Today
I have never being an effective leader at least not before a decade and half ago. But I have been a leader and so have you. We are all born leaders. The fact that you can lead yourself, prove right that we are all born leaders. But do not be carried away. Stay with me because I am not just talking about ‘leadership’ but ‘effective leadership’.
“The secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his time when it comes”. Benjamin Disraeli.
Well, you will never know what effective leadership is until you do some research. Effective Leadership is a process not a one-day thing as most people will see it. What you do on a consistent daily basis prepares you for it. To become an effective leader, you have to work on it every day. There’s an old saying: “Champions don’t become champions in the ring. They are mainly recognized there”. This is true. Your daily routine speak volume of how you develop into becoming an effective leader.
One thing that separates effective leaders from leaders is the way they invest in those who follow them. What is your personal plan for growth? Just as you need a growth plan to improve, so does those in your team. If you are the leader of a business, an organization, or a department, you have to create a culture of growth. And when the people in your team learn that personal growth and effective leadership are valued, they will ensure that such environment is maintained and the growth potential will explode.
Being an effective leader is a lot like investing in business. If your hope is to make returns in a day, you’re not going to be successful. The secret of effective leadership is embedded in your daily agenda. If you continually involve the leadership process, the growth potential of your leadership growth will skyrocket.
Leaders are learners. In a study of ninety top leaders from a variety of fields, Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus notes: “It is the capacity to develop and improve their skills that distinguishes leaders from their followers”. “Successful leaders are learners. And the learning process is ongoing, a result of self-discipline and perseverance. The goal each day must be to get a little better, to build on the previous day’s progress”. John C. Maxwell.
The truth is, many people fail to recognize the value of effective leadership. Others have no idea of its prominence. They believe it is only for a selected few – the people at the top of the corporate ladder. What a perverse way of thinking! Only a few of us see ourselves as leaders. Are you in this category? If not, why? If yes, what qualities do you possess as a leader?
Many people find themselves placed in a leadership position only to look around and discover that no one is following them. At that point, it’s time to learn how to lead. A lot of us has experienced this probably in our earlier days as leaders. But the ability to learn from mistakes and adjust accordingly matters most. When you recognize your lack of skill and begin the daily discipline of personal growth, exciting new things begin to happen.
